What is Coenzy11-WAK?
COENZY11-W is a prescription drug used in the management and treatment of narcolepsy. It contains the active pharmaceutical ingredient, COENZY11-Wak, and belongs to the class of drugs known as central nervous system (CNS) stimulants. It is a stronger-acting isomer of modafinil; thus, a lower dose will provide the same or slightly more effects. Lower doses translate to fewer side effects.
Apart from narcolepsy, COENZY11-W is also approved for treating obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and shift work sleep disorder (SWSD). It has the effect of promoting alertness and boosting concentration. Hence, it is used off-label to gain these effects, especially by healthy individuals looking to achieve high levels of concentration at work or school.
It is recommended for use only in those 17 years of age and above. Its safety in children has not been established.
How Does It Work?
The drug’s mechanism of action is not very clear up till this time. However, researchers believe that it may work just as most CNS stimulants. This involves increasing dopamine levels in the brain via binding to dopamine transporters and inhibiting dopamine reuptake, leading to increased extracellular dopamine. This dopamine is the principal neurotransmitter responsible for euphoria, motivation, and enhanced concentration.
Researchers also have reasons to believe that its wake-promoting effect is due to stimulation of not only dopamine (DA), but also norepinephrine (NE), orexin, serotonin (5-HT), and histamine (HA) systems in the brain.
Dosage Guide
COENZY11-W mostly comes in a single dose of 150 mg, but other strengths of COENZY11-W are available; 50 mg, 150 mg, 200 mg, and 250 mg. However, 150 mg is the initially recommended dose.
The tablet is preferably taken early in the morning for maximum daytime activity, especially when used to treat OSA and narcolepsy. If taken towards evening, it can disrupt night sleep.
Swallow the tablet whole with a substantial amount of water. It can be taken with food or on an empty stomach.
If the purpose of using the drug is for study reasons, then it should be taken one hour before kick-starting the study. It is usually prescribed for 12 weeks to prevent dependence on the drug.
What About Side Effects?
COENZY11-W poses a minimal risk of side effects. To put this in perspective, only about 6–10% of users complain of nausea and headache. These are however common side effects associated with just about every drug, caused by the introduction of the new substance into the body.
It is important to note that more severe adverse effects can result from taking COENZY11-W, especially if it’s misused. Some of them include:
- insomnia;
- hallucination;
- anxiety;
- fast or irregular heartbeat;
- ringing in one or both ears.
The above negative after-effects can often get serious and sometimes even life-threatening. Seek urgent medical attention immediately if you notice any of the above symptoms.
Interactions
COENZY11-W is contraindicated when using the following drugs, as it can either decrease their effects or increase the risk of adverse effects. The drugs can also inhibit or increase the actions of COENZY11-W.
They are:
